The Plastics Sector in Türkiye

Plastic producers, sellers, importers, and exporters are closely interested in Plast Eurasia İstanbul. As of 2023, the sector, which has exceeded a production capacity of 10 million tons, aims to further increase this figure in 2024. While the sector is expected to reach a turnover of 53 billion dollars by the end of the year, the export of plastic products has already surpassed 7 billion dollars. These impressive figures show that the contribution of the plastic sector to the national economy has been increasing every year and that the sector plays an important role in Türkiye's growth. In the last decade, Turkey's plastic sector has achieved significant annual growth, surpassing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate. With this production capacity, Türkiye has risen to become the second-largest plastic producer in Europe and ranks sixth in the world. This success highlights the competitive strength of the Turkish plastics sector in international markets and its strategic importance in the global production chain. In addition to all this, Türkiye's success in plastic production has been reinforced not only in terms of quantity but also by the support of sustainable and innovative projects in the sector. The plastic sector, which embraces innovation, environmental responsibility, and high value-added production, will continue to make Türkiye a strong player on the global stage.

Transformation in Plastics Production

Türkiye experienced a decline of 5,3% in the quantity and 7,1% in the value of plastic product production in the first half of 2024. Despite this decline, production has reached 5 million tons and 26,8 billion dollars. However, with expectations of a recovery in the second half of the year, the 2024 year-end forecasts indicate that production will decrease by 3,2% in terms of quantity but will increase by 24,4% in terms of value, reaching levels of 10,1 million tons and 53,7 billion dollars. This transformation demonstrates that the sector aims to increase its high value-added production capacity, and that Turkey maintains its global competitiveness in plastic production. If you want to meet with plastic manufacturing companies and seize the opportunity to establish new collaborations with them, don't forget to participate in the Plast Eurasia Istanbul, 34th Internetional İstanbul Plastics Industry Fair. Türkiye's Strong Performance in Imports and Exports

The largest markets for Türkiye's plastic product exports were Germany, the United Kingdom, Iraq, Italy, and the USA in the first half of 2024. These countries hold an important position both in terms of tonnage and monetary value. Germany has become our largest export market with an import volume of 67.000 tons and a monetary value of 250 million dollars. England ranks second with 103 thousand tons, while Iraq and Italy are also among our largest markets. In addition to all this, 48% of exports and 70% of imports were made to the top 10 countries. In the plastic export market, these 10 countries constitute a significant share of 48% in terms of tonnage and 46% in terms of value. In terms of imports, China has become our largest import partner with a 26.6% share in tonnage and a 19.4% share in value. Such data reveal Turkey's increasing influence and potential in the production of plastic products and plastic raw materials and in international trade.
