Urea is a solid, colorless, odorless, neither acidic nor alkaline, highly soluble in water, and relatively nontoxic. It is widely used in chemical fertilizers as a rich and convenient source of nitrogen. Urea is also an important raw material in the chemical industry. More than 90% of the world's urea production is for use as nitrogen-containing chemical fertilizers. Urea is an important raw material for the production of many chemical compounds, including: plastics, especially urea formaldehyde resins; adhesives, such as urea formaldehyde and urea melamine formaldehyde, which are used in the manufacture of water-resistant plywood; and urea nitrate is used as a type of explosive.
